Carpal tunnel syndrome, a painful condition affecting the hand and wrist, is caused by compression of the median nerve. As the condition progresses and the median nerve continues to be squeezed, less blood and nutrients flow to it. This often results in weakness, pain, and numbness in the fingers and thumb. Carpal tunnel syndrome usually occurs only in adults, and women are three times more likely than men to develop this condition.
